Work with local schools including coaching gig rowing and indoor training at Cape Cornwall Secondary School. Visit to Sennen Primary School.

On Wednesday 5th July Pete, Emma and Skippy took Cape Cornwall up to Sennen Primary School to give the children a closer insight into cornish pilot gigs. The children had just returned from an excursion to the Scillies where they were introduced to our heritage sport.

Pete gave them an introduction to the boat which followed closely by 20 questions (including those on plankton) of which the children of all ages ranging from 5 up 10 asked! Skippy!!!!!!!!!! (now know as Sir Skippy) gave them the in and outs of oars, how they are made, what they are made of, where they go, who has the longest, design etc. the children then measured the oars.

Sennen School virtual rowing lesson

Mark Francis from Mounts Bay Gig Club, had the children sat in an arrangement to simulate being in a boat - we had 3 crews "the great white" "galaxy" and “lyonesse”. They pretended to row in very rough weather and were asked to express their feelings by writing it as poetry.

'"Sir"

The closure of the lesson ended with the children having to answer a questionnaire. - a great morning had by all. On Monday the children will be coming down to cove to be taken out in the boats - oh yes!!! and to have a BBQ.
